AGRO-TOURISM

Khopoli · 21.5 acres · Completed

Selected for the India Pavilion, London Design Biennale 2021

A 21.5-acre sloping site along a river in the Khopoli region of the Western Ghats, the project is located in a rural village with existing paddy fields, dense patches of old native vegetation and rich biodiversity. An ecological survey undertaken before starting work identified 110 plant species, along with endemic, uncommon, rare, protected and IUCN Red-listed species of fauna. Considering the sensitivity of the region, the design sought to work with the existing landscape rather than extensively alter it, recognising the importance of retaining existing habitats. A large, densely vegetated patch was therefore retained and reinforced as forest, while farming, orchards and dairy were located according to the suitability of the terrain. The existing paddy fields were retained as part of the agricultural landscape, while a large waterbody became another important element of the site. The master plan evolved through an overlay of slope analysis, ecological survey and the need to generate additional income to support organic farming and the conservation of existing trees. This approach also helped minimise the footprint of the tourist cottages.
